Getting there & the terminal
In Ciutadella, ferries to Alcúdia don't depart from the historic town harbour but from Port Exterior de Son Blanc (Port Comercial Son Blanc, 07760 Ciutadella de Menorca), the outer port opened in 2011 and run by PortsIB, south of the centre. Baleària lists taxi, bus, parking and vending machines at the port; Menorca Lines and Corsica Ferries also check in at the same outer port. Allow a few minutes longer than the map suggests for the drive from the centre to the port, and use the berth given in your departure notification.
Check-in & departure
- Baleària: at least 90 minutes with a vehicle, at least 60 minutes on foot before departure; boarding is no longer guaranteed after that.
- Menorca Lines: with a boarding card already issued, up to 30 minutes on foot and up to 60 minutes with a vehicle before departure; without a boarding card, one hour or more than one hour beforehand. Online check-in opens 15 days before departure; otherwise the operator automatically emails boarding cards 48 hours in advance.
- Corsica Ferries: the operator publishes no separate deadline for Ciutadella; on its Mallorca sailings from Sète, 90 minutes with a vehicle and 30 minutes on foot apply. Don't allow less time in Ciutadella, and use the online check-in, which opens seven days before departure.
Photo ID and your boarding card should be kept to hand with all three operators. Vehicle type, length and height must match the booking.
On board
Depending on your sailing, you'll be on very different ships. During the day, Baleària runs fast ferries - the Margarita Salas with a bar terrace, executive lounge and video-monitored "Casitas de la Calma" for pets, plus Ramon Llull and Jaume III in the current feed - and in the early morning the conventional ships Abel Matutes or Martín i Soler, which have cabins, a café and digital entertainment. Menorca Lines' Som Menorca (400 passengers, 65 cars) has indoor seating with screens, outdoor seating, a snack bar and free Wi-Fi. Corsica Ferries covers the leg with a Mega-Express ship from its Toulon rotation: more cabins and restaurants, but a crossing of around two and a half hours.
Vehicles, bikes & pets
Cars, motorbikes, motorhomes and bicycles can be booked with all three operators; Menorca Lines carries bicycles free of charge. Measure your vehicle including any roof box and rack, as the vehicle deck stays closed even on this short crossing. With Baleària, pets need a booked space: a pet-friendly seat for pets up to eight kilos in a carrier, a pet cabin or Casita depending on the ship, plus a pet boarding card and valid health documents. Menorca Lines carries pets free of charge; dogs travel on a harness and lead in the designated area, cats in a carrier, and a microchip, rabies vaccination and pet passport are required. Arrival & onward travel
In Alcúdia you arrive at the Muelle Comercial (s/n, 07410 Alcúdia), the commercial quay at the northern end of the Port d'Alcúdia; Baleària lists Wi-Fi, taxi, bus and parking there. According to Corsica Ferries, Palma is about a 50-minute drive away. Arrange your hire car, bus or pickup around the confirmed arrival time of your sailing, not the route's typical duration.
Tickets & fares
Compare the three operators using identical dates, passengers, vehicle dimensions and seat category - a shorter crossing time may be tied to a different category. With Menorca Lines, the Basic fare only allows date changes, while the Flexible fare also allows cancellations with restrictions; changes are possible up to two working days before departure and only before boarding cards are issued, and passenger tickets remain valid for one year. Corsica Ferries distinguishes between Standard and Flex fares, while Baleària handles changes and cancellations through the chosen fare tier. Short island route
From Ciutadella straight to Alcúdia
Ciutadella-Alcúdia is the shortest connection between Menorca and Mallorca. Baleària sails year-round with fast ferries and, in the early morning, with conventional ships; Menorca Lines runs the fast ferry Som Menorca; Corsica Ferries covers the leg on certain days with a ship from its Toulon rotation.
Crossing time therefore ranges from about one hour to two and a half hours. Don't compare the route as a whole - compare the specific sailing, including ship, duration and operator.
